Our History

For 40 years, Harvest Home has walked alongside women through one of life's most vulnerable seasons—from pregnancy through postpartum—empowering them as they build healthy, stable futures for themselves and their babies.

In 1985, Christy Minder provided a home to a young woman who was pregnant and needed support. Christy called on her friend, Sandy Bredberg, to help. Quickly finding that the need surpassed what they were able to provide themselves, our founders brought in the partnership of local churches and other supporters to serve unhoused pregnant women in our Venice Home.

Venice Home

Since 1989, our Venice home has served as a sanctuary on the westside of Los Angeles, providing a safe and nurturing environment for up to 10 pregnant women and their babies at a time. Until a few years ago, the Venice Home was the only site for our programming.

Pico Home Expansion

In 2022, we expanded our impact by opening a second home in Pico Robertson, creating a thoughtful two-step program model. The Pico Robertson location can house up to 17 mothers and their babies, serving as a bridge to independence.

After mothers settle into our program at the Venice location, they transition to our Pico Robertson home where they stay up to 9 months postpartum, building the foundation for independent living. As they move into permanent housing, they remain part of our community through our alumnae program.

Family Program

In response to the need for family-centered housing that can support women who are pregnant and already parenting, Harvest Home launched our Family Program in late 2024 with the goal of ensuring that at least 25% of all Pico Home bedrooms are reserved for families. The Family Program promotes maternal and infant health, preserves family unity, and gives women the time and support to prepare for long-term financial and housing stability.

From an act of kindness , Harvest Home has grown to serve two generations of families across four decades, helping women transform their lives.
